#FFFF00 dev diary episode 1: the phantom menace

I guess I should write something here in order to show that I’m developing stuff.

So, I started by drawing a little man, a little red man, I’m not sure yet if he’s a communist or an Indian-American (racism, yay!) but I’m pretty sure he helped me quite a lot in developing the game. Say hi to temporary protagonist: Reddie.

He was a rather jolly guy, he walked left, and he walked right, and he walked up, and he walked down. At the time he still didn’t knew what a grid is, or how to be animated, heck he didn’t even know how to turn himself, but I have to say his moonwalk was almost perfect. That made me pretty angry, I mean, I realized that I should have to teach all that stuff to Reddie, and teaching is boring, especially when teaching equals coding the controls for the game.

Fortunately a nice little tool called Tiled and a nice little python library came into help, and that reminded me that I still had to create a temporary level. So I drew a street.

Why is Reddie stranded on a street? Because.
And a weird street nonetheless, if you adventure further then were your suppose to weird things happens.

Anyhow, after days of coding and hard work Reddie finally learned to walk only in a gridly way (although I’m not sure gridly is an actual word) and to turn around, but he still was hard on learning how to animate himself.
But what would a game be without interactions?
I’ve got no idea, a movie maybe? Nevertheless I had to begin implementing environmental objects at that point. So, here’s a door.

Well, it doesn’t really look like a door, but it works like a door… most of the times.
Actually in the beginning it worked using a simple script placed on the map, when Reddie walked on a certain tile the door used to open or close. But you know, we don’t want Reddie to be a sissy, he have to use his HANDS to open doors, like a man!

So after two other days our friend Reddie learned how to open doors… more or less. In fact he really opened that door one time every year or something like that, so I called a very Twin Peaky background to help.

And so Reddie now is not only a guy that walks around, He’s a guy that walks around and OPENS FUCKING DOORS. HOW AWESOME IS THAT!

Although now it’s time to work on that animation thing…
