#FFFF00 dev diary episode 1.5: I made something

I’ll be back in the next days with the adventures of Reddie, but while working on the animations I ended up programming something that could be even of general use.

This is a simple saver/loader of data structure (in this case lists of dictionaries) in python that uses the cPickle library. It’s just a little program anyway, but someone could find it useful so I put it here.

#FFFF00 dev diary episode 1: the phantom menace

I guess I should write something here in order to show that I’m developing stuff.

So, I started by drawing a little man, a little red man, I’m not sure yet if he’s a communist or an Indian-American (racism, yay!) but I’m pretty sure he helped me quite a lot in developing the game. Say hi to temporary protagonist: Reddie.

Official Announce: #FFFF00 In Development

What is #FFFF00?

#FFFF00 is an rpg (role playing game) in the purest sense of the word, all the gameplay revolves around interpreting a character created by the player, every action has a consequence and the world reacts differently to each of the player’s choice. The objective of #FFFF00 is not only to be the most complete “role playing” experience possible, but also to mix elements of rpg and “art game” in order to create an unique emotional-oriented experience.

What features will #FFFF00 have?

  • A complete role playing experience that permits to interprete any realistic character the player can think of
  • Based on a totally original rpg ruleset
    • Dozens of perks to personalize your character
  • Plot that mixes elements from postmodernism and “Murder & Mystery” novels
  • Multiple endings
  • The game is set in modern times, in a completely explorable Mysterious Hotel in the middle of nowhere
  • Dream sequences that changes along with the player’s character personality
  • Enhanced “moral system”, no arbitrary alignments, each npc reacts to your actions applying his own moral view

How #FFFF00 will be played?

In #FFFF00 there is no big “fighting system”, after having created his character the player will be able to move with a top down visual (reminding of old snes japanese role playing games) and to interact with object and people with a multiple choice menu that will pop out when needed. The game will not be in “real time”, and the time in the game will advance only after certain actions (like trying to go to sleep).

What #FFFF00 will look like?

The idea is to have a really dark looking game, set in a decadent hotel in the middle of nowhere it will feel like a weird, uncomfortable dream. Aesthetically it will make use of a lot of contrasting styles, like black and white hand drawn sketches, 8-bit graphics, photographies and so on, in order to amplify the feeling of uncomfortable weirdness.

Who Will like #FFFF00?

#FFFF00 is a game made especially for those who loves roleplaying, but its particular plot and modern setting will make it enjoyable by anyone who would like to try a weird, new, experience.

How my character will level up in #FFFF00?

Simply, it won’t. The “leveling up” mechanic does not make sense in an adventure set in a precise and short span of time, statistics and perks will be set at the creation of the character.

How the #FFFF00 inventory will work?

You pick an object, it goes in the inventory, you use it when the context permits it, really simple, nothing too fancy.

What are the influence you had in coming up with the concept for #FFFF00?

Too many to count but the main influences for the story come from the book “And Then There Were None” by Agatha Christie, the game “Flower Sun & Rain” by Goichi Suda and the TV Series “Lost”, while the gameplay it’s mainly inspired by classic western rpg such as the “Fallout” series or “Arcanum”. I also love Chris Avellone with all my heart.

There will be the possibility to form a “party” in the game?

Not really, you will be able to make certain npc follow you in some situations, but you’ll never be able to control them directly.

I’ll have to pay to play this game?

Probably, we are putting our hearts into making this game so we wouldn’t like to die of hunger, the price will probably be around 7$ so not really much, hell most people pay 70$ for really horrible mainstream games, in comparison 7$ are nothing.

I want to support you, what can I do?

Just go on pinkskyrainbow.wordpress.com and click the donate button, or you can wait our kickstarter (we’ll probably open one around october). In alternative you can submit your works to pinkskyrainbowbusiness@gmail.com, we’re currently searching people who can draw and people who can make little shiny graphics for 2d videogames.

Why we’re late (and what do we need)

You may have noticed that we’re proceeding really slow, don’t be afraid, we are awesome and we are working harder than ever… so why are we late? Well, we recently added to our team two new programmers, and as you may understand we are in full “coordination phase”, that means that when we’ll commence coding again we’ll be super-fast, super-efficient and super-powered since now we have two new programmers (we’ll present them to you soon with a nice shiny post).

On another note we are in the meantime of preparing a trailer for initiating our funding operation, we REALLY need an artist, someone who could draw the first concept arts for the characters and things like that, so if you can draw, or you know someone who can, just drop us a mail at pinkskyrainbowinfo at gmail dot com (sadly if you want to join us we can only pay you in hugs)

C-C-C-Changeeeee! [We're changing the rendering method, it will take some time]

Yes, the project is not dead, it’s actually more alive than ever.

We were finding some difficulty with the current rendering system so we are working in implementing one based on maps made with Tiled Map Editor (http://www.mapeditor.org/) and now everything seems more happy!

It will take some time so, sorry we can’t relase a demo in december as promised.

Go team PSR!
